Eligibility

In order to participate in the Stanford Rental Homes Program, you must be housing-eligible. Your housing eligibility will be verified with the University at the time of application. Please see the Rental Housing Program's Eligibility Criteria below for reference.

Rental Eligibility Categories*:

The following list outlines the priority ranking system. Stanford Rental Homes is currently only renting to Housing-1 (H1) thru Housing-5 (H5) priorities.

  • Eligible for On Campus Homes: H1

  • Eligible for Special Designation: H1 thru H3

  • Eligible for Off Campus Homes: H1 thru H5

H1

  • Tenure and Non-Tenure Line (includes SLAC and VA)  
  • Senior Fellow Members of Academic Council at Special Policy Centers and Institutes 
  • Senior Fellows at the Hoover Institution  
  • N11 and N99 Staff  
  • Acting and Visiting Faculty

H2

  • Medical Center Line (MCL)  
  • Clinician Educators (includes Professor (full), Associate Professor and Assistant Professor) 
  • Szego Professors

H3

  • Public Safety Officers employed by Stanford 
  • Other Staff employed by Stanford University or SLAC (includes Retired Faculty on Recalled Duty) 
  • Clinical Instructors
  • Academic Postdocs (also known as Clinical or Research Fellows) 

H4

  • Stanford Hospital and Clinics Medical Residents
  • Stanford Hospital & Clinics (Employees and interns)

H5

  • Visiting Academics (7) (includes Fellow, Researcher, Scholar, as well as visitors to the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences - CASBS)

H6

  • Employed on Stanford Lands (includes Stanford Shopping Center, Welch Road, and Research Park)
  • Employees within the city limits of Palo Alto or Menlo Park, or individuals age 62 or older who live in either of the two cities.
  • All other households who do not meet the above criteria.

 

* Qualifying Employment: must be employed at least 30 hours per week (75% FTE) at or above the minimum wage during the entire lease term. Lease term cannot exceed duration of Qualifying Employment. Currently your eligibility priority must fall within categories H1 thru H5.

 

Lease Term:

 

Stanford Rental Homes provides transitional housing for qualified faculty and senior-level staff at discounted rates.

The lease options available are:

  • 9 to 12 months if the lease start date is between October to March, for a maximum of a 5 year period.
  • 6 to 12 months if the lease start date is between April to September, for a maximum of a 5 year period.
  • Month-to-month, subject to an additional monthly rental premium. Not to exceed the maximum period of five years.

Leases are offered for periods of one year or shorter, and are generally renewable, subject to a recertification process, up to a maximum program benefit of five years. Short-term leases, defined as less than six to nine months (dependent on lease start date), are available, (month-to-month and subject to a short-term premium per month).
